Expansion works begin at the Port of Sines

With the consignment of the East Breakwater enlargement, the expansion works at the Portugese Port of Sines will begin, allowing the port to double its containerised cargo capacity.

The extension works to the East Breakwater will be carried out by Conduril – Engenharia SA. With a total investment of approximately US$78 million (€72 million), the contract includes the enlargement of the breakwater by 750m, which will reinforce the protection of the east side of the port, regarding the next expansion phase of the Sines Container Terminal – Terminal XXI, for the concession operator – PSA Sines.

 

The works are due for completion during the first quarter of 2023, the extension of the infrastructure will create the conditions for the simultaneous reception of four ultra large container carriers.

Upon completion of this next expansion phase, Terminal XXI will double its installed capacity to 4.1 million TEU.

It should be noted that the amendment to the concession contract for awarding the expansion of Terminal XXI was signed on 12 October, resulting in a totally private investment of US$721 (€661) million , from PSA Sines.
