“There are still no official data, but the lack of pears is noticeable. 2019 will certainly have the lowest production ever in Italy,” reports Albano Bergami from the Pera interbranch organization.
“Of course there are differences between the various territories and varieties – summer pears weren’t affected as much, while volumes of Abate pears have dropped considerably.”
There are huge differences also within single companies, as some productions are experiencing a 90% drop in volumes while others are just below the norm. The official data will only become available in early August.
